Lift As You Climb: Panel Discussion

To kick off International Women’s Day at 1871 and to underscore the 2018 theme “Press for Progress,” we’ll be celebrating women in our community who are thriving in fields traditionally dominated by men. You’ll hear from women trailblazers about their challenges and triumphs, and the strategies they’ve used to pave the way for their peers. We can all rise together, and this discussion will focus on ways women can advance in their own careers, as well as how we can promote and support each other.

Maker Fair 10:30am-2:00pm

It’s pop-up shop time! Check out our specially curated roster of locally crafted goods — all by women makers! From art to home goods to jewelry and more, you’re bound to find something you’ll love. Delicious eats will also be available from a number of our favorite local, woman-owned food vendors as part of the 1871 ChiBuys program.

Our afternoon workshops are designed to educate, empower, and inspire. Whether you’re starting your own business or seeking tactical tips to advance your career, there’s something for everyone!

Building Your Company’s Brand 11:00am-12:00pm

(Track 1: Lessons in Entrepreneurship) What makes a great brand? How do you craft a compelling, memorable, and engaging brand personality that will shine through the clutter of today’s media-saturated world? Learn how strategy, messaging, visuals, and the human element all work together to bring your company’s brand to life.

Everyday Negotiating 11:o0am-12:00pm

(Track 2: Professional Development) The act of professional negotiation tends to look completely different for women and men. In many ways, negotiation is the key to closing the pay and value gap in the workplace, and it’s high time for all of us to take the bit. This workshop will equip you with the attitude, perspective, and skills to demonstrate your value to decision makers.

Effective Leadership 12:30pm-1:30pm

(Track 2: Professional Development) As a leader, you must provide vision and direction, grow others, and buffet against any obstacles that arise. Figuring out how to get others to perform to their fullest potential can sometimes feel like a game of chess where the rules keep changing and the pieces won’t stay still, and yet, effective leadership can be as rewarding as it is challenging. In this workshop, you’ll explore strategies for authentic, effective leadership in the modern world.

Entrepreneurs’ Roadmap: A Guide to Designing Your Business Model 1:00pm-2:30pm

(Track 1: Lessons in Entrepreneurship) Women entrepreneurship is on the rise as more female-founders are starting businesses that solve a problem in their lives. With the Business Model Canvas (based on the book Design a Better Business: A Handbook For Visionaries, Game Changers and Challengers), you will be able to look at your business idea from different angles to ensure that what you are envisioning is a viable business model.
