Spoiler Alert: For those of you who have been following along, this season of Game of Thrones has been a whirlwind of action and emotion. But with Sunday night’s finale we can all breathe easy for a while as the land of Westeros recuperates. As we wait in anticipation for what happens next, take some lessons back to the workplace from this season’s 10 wild episodes.
1. Network, network, and then network some more.
If there’s one thing we learn about love in Westeros, it’s that politics are more important. The strategic marriages of Margaery and Joffrey, Sansa and Tyrion, and Cersei and Loras serve as a reminder that it’s not just what you know, but who you know. Make as many connections as possible; you never know when you’ll need them for a career switch or a battle over kingship.
2. It’s important to do well, but don’t forget to do some good too.
We see that through her charitability in freeing the unsullied slaves, Daenerys Targaryen is able to stomp through the lands across the Narrow Sea. Her good-nature also leads to a powerful association with the Seven Sons in Yunkai. In your professional life, don’t forget to make time for giving back and thinking about others. It can be just as important to treat an intern or mail-boy well as it is the CEO.
3. Look for help in unexpected places.
Jamie’s unexpected alliance with Brienne shows us that you can’t write anyone off as a potential partner until you’ve tried them out. If you’re stuck on a problem, take a walk over to a team that you don’t usually interact with and see if they have any suggestions. Here at Better Weekdays, we like to run ideas by our fellow startups at 1871 to see what unique perspectives they might be able to contribute.
4. Don’t burn bridges.
In last week’s unforgettable prequel to the finale, there is a glimmer of hope for the Starks as Robb returns to the Crossing to rekindle his alliance with Walder Frey. But did anyone really think grouchy old Walder would forget that Robb had burned him so badly just a few episodes earlier? If you say you’re gonna marry someone’s daughter, don’t go marrying someone else right after. In the office, remember the importance of keeping your word and maintaining allies.
5. Overcoming adversity with a partner forms the best bonds. And might even save your life.
In episode one we find Jon Snow pledging his loyalty to the wildlings and leaving his life as a member of the Night’s Watch. Not all is well north of the Wall; however, as the wilding clan is not so willing to just accept him as one of their own. He finds love in Ygritte and and as they are quite literally cut from the wildings, they save each other. Find a workplace friend to have your back; the support of another person can come in handy more than you think.
6. When looking at a problem, try to approach it through someone else’s eyes.
This season reveals Bran and Jojeh as having special powers to see through the eyes of animals (and even humans in a special case!). Wargs, as they’re called, have a special skill that can be extremely valuable for problem solving in the workplace. If you’re having a disagreement with a coworker or difficulty seeing the solution to a problem, trying imagining it through the perspective of someone else.
7. Being at the bottom of the ladder is just the first step on your way to the top.
Shae, Tyrion’s immigrant lover, puts up with hard labor and long hours because it’s the only way she can be with the person she loves. For interns and entry-level workers, it can be hard to see the top if your days are filled with boring tasks. It’s important to remember that you have to put in your due time to get to where you want to be.
8. Never underestimate the power of branding.
The House Lannister is awesome because they are the House Lannister. Tywin prides himself on his loyalty to the family name and builds it to mean something much more than just a powerful clan of blondes. Do the same thing for yourself in your professional life—make your name represent who are on a deeper level and make sure no one forgets it. A Lannister always pays his debts.
9. No matter how good your ideas are, remember your place. Rationality isn’t always as important as building consensus.
Tyrion is obviously a smart dude, but he’s often too aggressive with his plans to have them recognized for their value. If you have a great idea that needs approval to move forward, focus on getting others on board before tooting your own horn.
10. Don’t confuse catching a break for talent. Learn your craft and hone your skills.
In a moment of shock and awe, Sam defeats the white walker and saves his love. But, come on, no one really believes little scared Sam is that brave or strong. In the workplace, don’t let a lucky break get to your head and distract you from focusing on continuing to learn. Just because you do one thing well doesn’t mean there isn’t room to improve.
11. Nobody likes an asshole.
Joffrey. Period.
