Entrepreneur-In-Residence

Arry Yu is a 22+ year emerging technology industry veteran, serial founder and strategic operator with expertise in scaling business from “zero to one” with a consistent track record building high-performing teams. Yu also works in venture capital as she serves as the Managing Director of Yellow Umbrella Ventures and Venture Partner with Startup Haven Fund. She also regularly serves as an educator, as Adjunct Professor and instructor for various academic institutions like the Saudi Digital Academy, Coding Dojo, Portland State University and the University of Washington Milgard School of Business. 

Web3 Innovation Lab Focus Areas

Digital Assets

Focus on supporting startups that develop and innovate around digital assets such as cryptocurrencies, NFTs, tokenized real-world assets, and other unique digital ownership models. 

Tokenization of Real-World Assets (RWAs)

Enables the creation, issuance, and management of tokenized assets, including securities and NFTs, allowing real-world assets to be represented on-chain. Examples include Polymath and Securitize.

Decentralized Exchanges and DeFi

Facilitates decentralized lending, borrowing, staking, and yield farming, allowing for peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries. Notable platforms include Aave, Compound, and MakerDAO.

Institutional Adoption, Liquidity and Market Infrastructure

Facilitates the investment of traditional financial institutions, corporations, and other large organizations in Web3 technologies and assets while ensures adherence to regulatory requirements 

Market Infrastructure

Focus on startups that work on underlying systems, technologies, and services that enable the efficient, secure, and scalable operation of decentralized markets and financial systems

Custody & Wallets

Provides secure storage of digital assets to protect against theft, loss, and cyberattacks. Includes both custodial (institutional-grade services like Anchorage and BitGo) and non-custodial solutions (hardware and software wallets).

Payments & Stablecoins

Manages post-trade processes to finalize and record asset transfers, ensuring counterparty obligations are met. This includes real-time or T+0 settlement models used in blockchain-based settlements, with firms like Paxos leading the space.

Interoperability and Bridging

Provides connectivity across multiple blockchains to facilitate cross-chain transactions and interoperability between digital assets. 

Web3-Powered AI

Focus on the startups building at the intersection of of decentralized web technologies and artificial intelligence to create more intelligent, efficient, and user-centric digital platforms.

Coordination Layers 

A set of technologies and protocols designed to facilitate seamless interaction, integration, and collaboration among various components or agents.

Agents

Artificial intelligence systems that operate autonomously, making decisions, performing tasks, and interacting with their environment without continuous human oversight

Physical Infrastructure

Focuses on areas such as high energy demands, cooling and resources requirements, smart grid management and optimizations and sustainabiity.

There are two steps for you to start engaging in the Innovation Lab Communities and Events:

Step 1: Self-Select & Join Innovation Lab Communities 

On the member portal, you have the power to self-select exactly which industry communities you want to be a part of. Joining tech specific Lab Industry Groups you are interested in gets you access to those member-only events and indicates to our team that you are interested in other events and opportunities in that specific industry.

Lab Portfolio for Growth Stage Members
 

The Innovation Lab Portfolio is an exclusive opportunity for growth-stage startups in our Innovation Lab communities. As a part of the portfolio, your company will be highlighted in various ways throughout the year and prioritized for corporate and investor connection opportunities. 

Eligibility:
  1. You must be in the startup stage as defined by 1871.
  2. Your solution must align with the industry or technology focus of the lab.
  3. Submit the growth stage information form.
How 1871 Defines a Growth-Stage Startup:

If a startup meets 3 out of 6 of the following criteria they are considered a Growth Stage Company and eligible for a Lab Portfolio: 

  • 2-5 strong leaders
  • 10-50 person team and growing
  • Strong marketing definition
  • Product Market fit 
  • Compelling Traction
  • $10-$100M Valuation
Portfolio Member Benefits:

Being in the portfolio provides opportunities to be showcased throughout the year to investors, corporates, and the larger industry-specific innovation ecosystem. Being in the portfolio makes you eligible for these benefits, but does not guarantee that you get to participate in all of them.
