Cracking the Code: Insider Look into 1871's 15th Annual Student & Graduate Coding Competition
This April 2024, 1871 ignited the coding spirit with their 15th annual Tech Challenge, in partnership with World Business Chicago! Held on 4.11 & 4.12 at 1871’s vibrant Chicago office, this event was a coder’s paradise, bringing together a dynamic group of university students & recent graduates passionate about coding for a 2-day final round coding competition.
Designed to highlight the brightest emerging talent, this year’s Tech Challenge received over 100 submissions from coders across the nation in the first round, the Qualifying Challenge. This round assessed the participants’ coding skills, accuracy, and problem-solving speed.
After deliberation, the top 44 students and recent graduates advanced to the final coding round. Several students from across the Midwest joined us in person, with coders located across the nation participating virtually, all competing for the opportunity to win cash prizes and other participation awards.
The atmosphere was electric as participants tackled complex problems and pushed the boundaries of coding innovation. It wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration of creativity, coding, and the future of tech!

Hear from our 2024 Tech Challenge participants on what makes this event so unique!
The Tech Challenge experience
At 1871, we’re all about connecting key players in tech for innovation – and our reach spans to young talent in universities! The competition provides students & recent graduates the opportunity to showcase their coding skills and connect them with 1871’s community of member companies looking for young emerging talent.
In-person participants also had opportunities to network with other talented coders, tour 1871’s HQ, and hear industry insights from member companies & partner representatives, including Trenton Dun, Director at ThinkChicago, Disha Gulati, CEO and Founder of Here Here Market, and Bazyl Horsey, Chief Technology & Product Officer of Arvist.
Importance of Tech Challenge Initiatives
The competitions aim to be both fun and intellectually stimulating, encouraging coders to think outside-the-box, come up with innovative solutions, and showcase their talents to potential connections and mentors in the tech field.
“At 1871, these tech challenges are not just about competition; they’re integral to our mission,” said Jessica Prath, Director of Talent Programs at 1871. “They drive innovation and open doors to new opportunities. Connecting emerging talent to our community creates a path for the future of technology.”
